San Nakji for President!
Wow, I can't believe I just watched Team Korea beat Team USA 7-3 in baseball. First they beat Japan, which was an amazing achievement, but beating the feared Team USA has just made my year (so far!). I used to love the Major League in the US. I have grown a little cold towards it after all the strikes and money rubbish that went on. When living in Korea I loved watching the OB Bears (now Doosan) and to know that the Korean league can compete with the Japanese league and the MLB is just great.Go Team Korea! Japan to come and then it's on to the semi-finals. By making the semi-finals, the Korean government has said they may exempt players from the compulsory military service all young men in Korea must undergo. Considering the suicide rate amongst soldiers and the fact that two years of your life must go into the army, that sounds better than prize money to me!San Nakji for President!

On Saturday, San Nakji was lucky enough to go and watch the cricket test match with New Zealand taking on the West Indies. For those of you who don't know, cricket test matches last five days. Yup, you heard that right! I got there for the most boring day, being day 3... Here is my photo journal. From my vantage point way up high, I could put my feet up and watch the game unfold.
New Zealand was batting and the West Indies were bowling. I really wanted to see the West Indies bat however.
As this man, the most famous cricketer in the world was playing. His name is Brian Lara and he is by far the most famous person ever to come from Trinidad & Tobago.
I have no idea what this guy was up to. There is no need for freshly laid eggs in the game of cricket. And to be fair, if you knew this was how you got your eggs, would you eat any?
The Trinidad and Tobago fans were excited to see their team.
But wait! What's that in the stands?
As it approached, I was sure my eyes were fooling me.
But no.... Surely it couldn't be a bunny!
A bunny out on the field during the lunch break to play some cricket with his human friends. Now I have seen everything!
The kids loved him, of course.
But the game was too important for him to spend too much time with them.
The only way to sit in the terraces. An inflatable mattress. Ahhhh, luxury!
The action and excitement had become too much for some.
Others chose to invade the pitch, putting a stop to the match.
I knew it was time to leave when I ate the worst chips (freedom fries) in the world. They were so bad even dipping them in blood didn't help. A song was called for, it went like this."Worst Chips in the World. Worst chips, worst chips, worst chips in the world"A true classic I think!
I can't even comment on the coffee. The game was over. Nothing had happened and we made out way home to watch grass grow.

It is important for men to remember, that as women grow older it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive and there's nothing worse than an oversensitive woman.
My name is Jeremy.... Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Renita. When I took "early retirement" last year, it became necessary for Renita to get a full-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed.
Shortly after she started working I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the Golf Course about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table.
I generally have lunch in the Men's Grill at the club so eating out is not reasonable. I'm ready for some home cooked grub when I hit that door .
She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now, it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed.
I really think my experience as a manager helps a lot. I consider telling people what they ought to do; it's one of my strong points... Now that she has gotten older, she does seem to get tired so much more quickly.
Our washer and dryer are in the basement. Sometimes she says she just can't make another trip down those steps. I don't make a big issue of this; as long as she finishes up the laundry the next evening, I'm willing to overlook it. Not only that, but unless I need something ironed to wear to the Monday lodge meeting, or to Wednesday's or Saturday's poker club, or to Tuesday's or Thursday's bowling, or something like that, I will tell her to wait until the next evening to do the ironing. This gives her a little more time to do some of those odds and ends like shampooing the dog, vacuuming or dusting .
Also, if I had a really good day on the course and it was wet and muddy, my clubs are a mess, so I let her clean them, you know . . . get the grit off
the grips and a little light Brillo on the club faces at a casual pace. My golf bag is heavy so I lift it out of the trunk for her. Women are delicate, have weak wrists and can't lift heavy stuff as good as men. But I did tell her I don't like to be wakened during my after-golf nap, so rather than bother me, she can put them back in the trunk when she's finished.
Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But boys, we take them for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or even three days. That way she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points.
When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half finished mowing the yard. I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me too, and then take her break by my hammock. That way she can talk with me until I fall asleep.
I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Renita. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other . . .
Signed, Jeremy

I went and saw the Ocenia GP Final of K1 yesterday. For those of you who don't know what it is, basically it is leglised thuggery, but technically it is kick boxing. Huge in Japan and Korea. Quite popular in Europe and down here too. Here's the website if you are interested in learning more.It was amazing watching these big guys beating each other into bloody pulps. Quite fun really. My friend brought along his girlfriend. Every time there was a big hit or some guy hit the canvas, I would look over to her to guage her reaction. She seemed to have only concern in her eyes. In a particularly brutal incident, one fighter hit the other with a vicious spinning back kick to the temple. He crumpled in a heap. The crowd lept up and cheered. It was truly spectacular. My friend's girlfriend stayed seated. She told me that she was concerned for the poor Dutchman who lay unmoving. No male around me seemed to share the same concern... Right there you have the difference between men and women. I guess men expect women to be this way. How disturbed are we when women in power, like Margaret Thatcher or Hillary Clinton, try to be unfeeling like a man? I admired this woman's concern for the fighter. It didn't however stop me from yelling and whooping for the victorious pugilist...San Nakji for President!
Trekking through the jungle, we came across the national plant of Aotearoa. It is a silver fern. One side is green and the other is this silver colour. A handy tip if stuck in the New Zealand bush... You can write messages which can be seen from a plane or helicopter with silver ferns. The light from the sky reflects very well off the silver side. Don't try it with the green side though...San Nakji for President!

Yes, that is really the name of this little guy. Sounds more like an old girlfriend of mine, without the slender bit... I know nothing about her except that she came in my nephew's happy meal... According to the happy meal, they are small and they come from somewhere...San Nakji for President!
Football is quite masculine... Unfortunately our national football team, the All Whites, don't quite live up to that tag... I haven't really got another photo that quite fits the bill however. They are engaging in a masculine hug though! I am not sure of the rules of Photo Friday, because I prefer this photoshopped version...

So I am waiting for my domino's pizza (no relation). Not one of those three chees ones, I am still paying for that three weeks after the fact. But one of those ones with no crust. I could go on about pizza, but indeed, I will save that for my next post. So, where was I? Oh, yes. I am waiting for pizza (sorry to go on about pizzza...) and I walk into the park next to the pizza place. It's a park my parents used to take me to when I was young. They told me that it was pretty much the way Disneyland was. Well, they weren't too wrong. Disneyland = Haunted Mansion, Park = Seesaw. Disneyland = Space Mountain, Park = 2 metre slide. Wow, scarily similar. I am currently undergoing therapy because of my damn parents. Did I tell you about the broken leg debacle? No? Must have been my shrink.I now travel with my camera everywhere. You never know when you may see someone naked, I mean something interesting to photograph. Lo and behold, in the park is this thing. It is what our native people call a Koru and symbolises eternity and life. Why it is sitting in the middle of New Zealand's answer to Disneyland, I will never know. This is what it looked like. It is now undergoing radical change in Photoshop world, but this is just so you know...Did I tell you I was waiting for pizza? Thought so ;o)San Nakji for President!

From the BBC: One of the biggest and most complete giant squids ever found is on display at London's Natural History Museum.Measuring a monstrous 8.62m (28ft), the animal was caught off the coast of the Falkland Islands by a trawler.Researchers at the museum undertook a painstaking process to preserve the giant creature, which is now on show in a 9m- (30ft-) long glass tank.Giant squid, once thought to be sea serpents, are very rarely seen and live at depths of 200-1,000m (650-3,300ft).They can weigh up to a 1,000kg; the largest ever spotted measured a vast 18.5m and was found in 1880 off Island Bay in New Zealand."Most giant squid tend to be washed up dead on beaches, or retrieved from the stomach of sperm whales, so they tend to be in quite poor condition," explained Jon Ablett, the mollusc curator at the Natural History Museum who led preservation efforts. As a result, finding such a large, complete specimen was something of a rarity, he said. The team nicknamed the creature Archie, after its Latin name Architeuthis dux , but it may have to revise this after finding out that the squid is probably female.Scientists admit they know little about the largest of the squidIt took several months to prepare the squid for display."The first stage was to defrost it; that took about four days. The problem was the mantle - the body - is very thick and the tentacles very narrow, so we had to try to thaw the thick mantle without the tentacles rotting," Mr Ablett told the BBC News website. The scientists did this by bathing the mantle in water, whilst covering the tentacles in ice packs, after which they injected the squid with a formol-saline solution to prevent it from rotting. The team then needed to find someone to build a glass tank which could not only hold the huge creature, but could leave the squid accessible for future scientific research, and they decided to draw upon the knowledge of an artist famed for displaying preserved dead animals."We contacted Damien Hirst's group after seeing their animals preserved in formalin. They put us in touch with a company who could make these tanks," explained Mr Ablett. The squid now resides in a glass tank, filled to the brim with preservative solution, and is one of 22 million specimens that can be seen as part of the behind-the-scenes Darwin Centre tour of the Natural History Museum.YAY GIANT SQUID!San Nakji for President!
