Topping Yourself

Kira's Slave is talking to a guy who says he wants to kill himself. He asked me for advice. I have to be honest and say that suicide has never crossed my mind. I can't start to understand what kind of state you would have to be in to even contemplate doing yourself in. That said, I do know about life having lived a fair bit longer than this 17 year old. Life is all about ups and downs. When things are down it is easy to believe that the misery is all about you and no one can possibly know how you feel. Well, anyone can tell you that is crap. We all suffer from life, but we all benefit from it also. How I would miss the taste of bacon if I were to die today. A simple pleasure to be sure, but one that makes life just that little bit better. Everyone has things that make life worth living. Whether it is a big thing like love or a little thing like rain on the roof at night. This is what life is about. We all eventually die, so why rush it. I say enjoy the little things, enjoy the big things when they come along. Every day brings something new, sometimes bad, sometimes good, but who can say? In my opinion life rocks! Death doesn't sound that great...

What say you all?

This is a hard subject for me. I was once at a point in my life where I really thought I couldn't go on. It was hard, I tried suicide twice and well, you can see, it didn't work.

But, I enjoy life now and I have found that there is NOTHING I can't handle if I just keep my faith and my trust in God. I love life...even in the times that it really sucks. I remember my favorite phrase. You can't enjoy a good day until you've experienced a bad one. You can never appreciate good unless there is bad. It's all very true.

So, I hope that this young man realizes that suicide is not the answer. Thing WILL get better. I've been there...many times...and somehow, things have always gotten brighten and hopeful.

When someone is talking there is hope.
Coincidentally, figures published today suggest that suicide rates in the UK are at their lowest in nearly a century. Umm, I'm not so sure. Sadly, many people take drugs (legal or otherwise) and alcohol to get by to cope with the pain of life. It may not be suicide as defined, but its a ticket to an early end, and we should try and recognise it as such.

there are times where I have been trapped in this way of thinking.

Talking is a good sign. I always suggest a professional. Talking about stuff with someone who is trained is helpful and they can offer help where needed.

Suicide doesn't have to be "the final solution" to coping with one's problems, but sadly that is too often the case. I have been severely depressed at times and have had suicidal thoughts as well, but you're right that "we all eventually die, so why rush it". I love to travel and that always keeps my hope alive, and suicide is the ultimate selfish act because we all have so much to contribute to the world. Anyone who is in good health should thank the high heavens just for that, and I think it's important to focus on things outside of ourselves because then you really realize how fortunate you are.

I lost a parent, a colleage, and a schoolmate to suicide. It's a terrible and selfish way to leave this world. However, people who end their lives are truly ill and need professional help.

I personally believe there is nothing so terrible that could happen to make someone end his/her life. However, I realize some people are stronger than others. I can only recommend that if you know someone is contemplating suicide, get them help. Call a suicide hotline. In the three cases where I knew people who ended their lives, I never knew they were contemplating the end of their lives (but now I realize there were warning signs). Trust me. You want to do what you can to help your friend.

When I contemplate the billions of people that have come and gone before us, I am always in awe of the concept of life. We are here for such a brief period of time so why rush it, relax and enjoy this time.
Besides, no one survives life anyway so be as happy as you possibly can be.
I agree, bacon and eggs in the morning. At that early morning breakfast, it is heaven on earth.
