Cicada

I am trying to push my crappy little Minolta to its' limits and yesterday I took a photo of a cicada that found its' way into San Nakji Manor. I have to come clean and say that I am not much of a wildlife photographer. I took five shots of this little guy and this was the only one that came out...
I really love cicadas. When they are around you know that summer is truly here and their continuous noise is somehow comforting. One interesting thing I learned recently about cicadas is that they don't come out of the ground every year, but after 3 years or seven years or 17 years. They have an infinity with prime numbers and somehow they have figured out this is the way to avoid predators. It seems to work well for them as we are never short of a ciacada or two!

San Nakji for President!

Actually, I read something on it once. There's a reason for the cycle, but damned if I can remember it.

Wow, I didnt know that about cicadas. They must have a really long life span.
I love these little guys too, having spent many a silent hot summer night listening to them

You dont know have touched me from inside. As a huge fan of summer, I dont much like winter, and I have got my own symbols of summer arrival. I will post them on my blog when I see them.

While living in Nashville, Tennessee one summer, we were bombarded with the little buggers. They were on their 13-year-cycle and it was awful! They were everywhere, so think that you could hear them inside over the radio or TV. They blew across the road in thick waves, such as snow during a blizzard and you could hear them crunch beneath your tires. I had remembered the fun shells they had left on the tree in our front yard while growing up. That was fun. The plague was not.

These are fascinating creatures. They have pretty colors on their bodies.

We have all sorts of invasions of bugs around here. I think we get cicadas, but I'm not sure. That would be something I'd need to look in to.

The cicada is beautiful. Excellent photograph. A year or two ago, we had a burst of 17 year cicadas. You almost couldn't hear yourself.

I concur with Fadh's comments. You captured a feeling many of us have about summer:

Only in Houston, Texas they are called, Katydids (I have no idea why..).
