Geography

A survey on NBC has concluded that American kids are not that great at geography. How are you my blogging friends? Can you answer these questions? You have to be HONEST!

1) Locate Lousiana on a map
2) 70 000 people were killed in an earthquake in what country in October of last year?
3) Locate Iraq on a map
4) Locate India on a map
5) Locate Israel on a map
6) What is the most spoken language in the world?
7) What is the most heavily fortified border in the world?

Also, do you think it is important to speak another language? Do you think it is important to know where countries referred to in the news are located?

San Nakji for President!

I am not sure about #6 but I know it is not English. It is between Chinese (but so many dialects that they may count each as an individual language) Spanish, or Arabic. I am thinking spanish.

And I would have guessed Palestine/Israel for #7

I got 8 of 10 on the quiz. I missed the capital of Kentucky and thought Pennsylvania was bigger than Georgia

You should do something about how the size of the western hemisphere is distorted on most maps to make it look bigger and thus more important

Not a clue off the top of my head. I'd have to research all this.

And Q1, yes. Q2, yes.

I can locate all the areas asked about on the maps. I love geography and aced it in elementary, junior high, high school, and college.

Louisiana should be one of the EASIEST states to locate. It's on the southern coast of the USA between Texas and Mississippi. It's the shaped just like a huge L. hehehehe

I believe the country that 70,000 people were killed in was Pakistan.

As for the most spoken language, I'm pretty sure it's Chinese (Mandarin Chinese perhaps?).

I suspect the DMZ in Korea is considered the world's most fortified. It has always been a very fortified area. I have a brother in law that is stationed near there in the US Army.

So, SN, how many did I get right?

I, too got 8 out of 10 and picked PA as well. Scarey, great minds think alike, Friar? I could get at least half of these right, I'm fairly sure, mostly.

I do think it's important to speak more than one language to have a better perspective on the world. Typically when learning another language you also learn about the culture and things make more sense.

It's also good for folks to know about our world. It isn't just about Minnesota or New Z. We're all in this together.
